What’s the Minimum Equipment for Starting a Microbrewery?

Taking the leap into professional brewing is an exciting journey. While large-scale systems like the one we installed in Latvia offer incredible capacity, many aspiring brewers start by asking: what is the absolute essential brewing equipment needed to get a microbrewery off the ground?

The core process of brewing beer dictates the fundamental equipment you’ll need. Here’s a breakdown of the minimum components:

  1. Mash Tun: This is where crushed malted grain is mixed with hot water to convert starches into fermentable sugars.
  2. Lauter Tun: Following the mash, the grain bed acts as a filter in this vessel. The sugar-rich liquid, known as wort, is separated from the spent grains.
  3. Brew Kettle: The wort is transferred here, where it is boiled. This step is crucial for sterilizing the wort, extracting bitterness from hops, and developing flavor and color.
  4. Fermenters: After boiling and cooling, the wort is moved into a fermenter. Yeast is added, which consumes the sugars and produces alcohol, CO2, and the wonderful flavors of beer. Starting with at least two fermenters allows you to have one batch conditioning while another is actively fermenting.
  5. Cooling System: A critical piece of equipment! The wort must be cooled rapidly after the boil to a temperature suitable for yeast pitching. This prevents contamination and ensures a healthy fermentation.
  6. Packaging Line: Once fermentation is complete, the beer needs to be packaged. This can range from a manual canning or bottling line to kegging equipment for supplying taprooms.

While it’s possible to source these components individually, a turn-key solution often provides the smoothest path to opening your doors. At Meto, our small-batch brewery systems integrate all these core elements—from the mash tun to critical cooling—into a cohesive, easy-to-operate package. This integrated approach provides a reliable and efficient entry into the world of professional brewing, allowing you to focus on what matters most: creating amazing craft beer.
